Italian cybercrime police have opened an investigation into a government email breach allegedly used by hackers to obtain sensitive Revolut customer data, according to local news agency reports.
Compromised Government Account At Center Of Probe
Investigators are examining the incident as a case of unauthorized computer access and computer fraud. Some Italian media reports linked the compromised email to the Prefecture of Reggio Calabria, though the agency denied sending any requests to Revolut. Revolut has declined to name the government body involved, citing the ongoing police investigation and confidentiality requirements, but confirmed it reported the breach to authorities as soon as it was detected and said its own systems, databases and customer funds remain secure.
Certified Email System Flagged For Security Gaps
The compromised account reportedly belonged to Italy’s Posta Elettronica Certificata system, a certified email service that carries the same legal weight as registered mail. Italy’s national cybersecurity agency had previously warned that while the system guarantees message delivery, it does not ensure the security of message content itself. The agency reported handling more than 650 cases involving misused or fraudulent certified email accounts since the start of 2026, highlighting a broader pattern of abuse within the system.
