How the Exploit Worked

According to blockaid, the attacker spent weeks preparing the operation by deploying 66 fake token contracts designed to resemble popular assets such as WETH, USDC and USDT. Fake liquidity pools were also created to make the opportunities appear profitable to the bot.

The automated system identified these transactions as potential gains and approved attacker controlled contracts. Those approvals later allowed the attacker to access and drain millions of dollars worth of ETH, USDC and USDT in a single transaction.

Attack Focused on Automated MEV Logic

Security experts described the incident as a counter-MEV honeypot attack that specifically exploited the trustless decision making process used by MEV bots. Some of the stolen funds have already been moved through Tornado Cash.

Jaredfromsubway.eth has long been linked to sandwich attacks on Ethereum. Research previously showed the bot was connected to roughly 70% of sandwich attacks between November 2024 and October 2025, a period that saw between 60,000 and 90,000 such attacks every month. Annual trader losses from sandwich attacks have been estimated at around $60 million.
