According to Peru’s electoral authority, only 40,213 potential votes remain to be counted, making it mathematically impossible for Sanchez to overtake Fujimori. However, election officials are expected to formally declare the winner in mid-July.

Election Dispute Raises Political Tensions

The closely contested runoff was delayed by reviews of disputed ballots, late-arriving votes from overseas and the narrow gap between the two candidates. Sanchez has alleged electoral fraud without presenting evidence and stated that he would not recognize the election results.

His request to annul thousands of overseas ballots, many of which favored Fujimori, was rejected by Peru’s national electoral jury.

Challenges Await Peru’s Next President

Fujimori is set to inherit a country facing political instability, economic inequality and rising public frustration with government institutions. Peru has had eight presidents in the last eight years, with none completing a full term.

During the campaign, Fujimori emphasized law and order, presenting herself as a leader capable of addressing rising crime, extortion and violence. Her expected victory also reflects a broader shift toward conservative leadership seen in parts of Latin America.
