Lagarde’s Possible Move to Davos Could Force an Early Change at the ECB

Christine Lagarde could be named head of the World Economic Forum within weeks, and that would end her time at the European Central Bank well before October 2027. Four people familiar with the matter say the forum's trustees may discuss her candidacy at a November 2 meeting. Nothing is final, and the WEF says only that it wants a full board session before the year closes. The ECB has declined to comment.

What the Forum Board Is Weighing

Lagarde, 70, is said to enjoy wide support among the 27 trustees, though sources stress her election is not certain. A vote could be timed so she arrives at Davos in January as chair in waiting. Larry Fink and Andre Hoffmann currently share the role after Klaus Schwab left last year.

The French Election Factor and ECB Vacancies

An early exit would let EU leaders choose her replacement before France votes in spring. Polls hint the far right could win, and Marine Le Pen’s victory might complicate talks. Lagarde also reportedly wants Emmanuel Macron involved in picking her successor.

Her departure would be the second Executive Board vacancy after Isabel Schnabel resigned, with Philip Lane leaving in May. Governments may settle all three jobs together. Klaus Knot and Pablo Hernandez de Cos lead the race for president, France eyes the chief economist post, and Germany intends to name Schnabel’s replacement.
