Bitcoin miner MARA Holdings purchased 1,292 BTC worth approximately $98.64 million on Wednesday, marking one of its largest on chain bitcoin accumulations in nearly a year, according to blockchain analytics firm Lookonchain.
A Shift Back Toward Bitcoin Accumulation
The purchase was made through trading platform FalconX and comes after MARA sold over 23,000 BTC worth roughly $1.63 billion earlier this year as part of a pivot toward AI infrastructure services. The company now holds 35,577 BTC total, including tokens managed under its digital asset strategy, valued at nearly $2.7 billion at current prices. The buy coincided with the Clarity Act failing its Senate cloture vote, with four Republicans joining Democrats in blocking the bill.

AI Safety Concerns Weigh On Sentiment
The purchase also came as prominent AI industry figures called for slower, more carefully supervised development of frontier AI models, citing safety concerns. Warnings from AI leaders, along with a researcher resignation citing existential risk concerns, unsettled investors and triggered selloffs in AI-related stocks, while some investors treated bitcoin as an alternative if AI development slows. Separately, MARA’s stock fell 2.7% to $11.24 after JPMorgan downgraded the company, citing concerns tied to its joint venture with Starwood.
