Payments Giant Expands Into Stablecoin Infrastructure
Mastercard has wrapped up its purchase of BVNK, a company specializing in stablecoin infrastructure, in a transaction worth as much as $1.8 billion. The announcement came Monday, with Mastercard explaining that joining its worldwide payment network with BVNK’s blockchain based systems will bridge digital and traditional currencies.

Company officials stated the merger is designed to give banks, fintech firms and businesses greater ability to use stablecoins and tokenized assets for international payments, payouts, settlement processes and treasury management.
No Disruption Expected for Existing Users
In a separate post, BVNK confirmed it has now fully joined Mastercard’s operations. The stablecoin company reassured its client base that the same teams, tools and integrations they’ve relied on will remain unchanged, meaning no steps are needed from current customers. BVNK explained the partnership opens the door for banks to launch stablecoin based payment offerings and tie customer accounts to digital wallets directly. It also stated that payment processors could benefit from merchant settlement available at all hours.
Additionally, BVNK pointed to Mastercard’s extensive network as a way to boost its card services and cross-border transfer capabilities.
How the Deal Came Together
Mastercard originally struck the acquisition agreement back in March, with terms allowing for up to $300 million in additional payments based on future milestones. The deal follows an earlier attempt by Coinbase to acquire BVNK for roughly $2 billion, an agreement that collapsed in November 2025 despite progressing through due diligence.
