Mexican Authorities Raid Hidden Crypto Mining Site Linked to Possible Cartel Activity

Mexican authorities have raided a covert crypto mining operation hidden in a remote mountain area, seizing hundreds of graphics cards as investigators examine possible links to power theft and money laundering.
Federal prosecutors, along with naval and state security forces, uncovered a mining setup that included around 300 graphics processing units, electrical transformers, multiple voltage terminals, and satellite internet equipment. The site was found in a rural region of Puebla, marking the fourth similar mining operation discovered nearby since last year.
Investigators Examine Power Theft and Illicit Funds
Authorities are investigating whether the mining operation was drawing unauthorized power from a nearby hydroelectric dam, as well as whether proceeds from the mining activity were used to disguise money linked to criminal organizations. Security experts say the scale and technical setup suggest a higher level of organization among those involved.
Mining’s History in Money Laundering Schemes
Crypto mining has previously been identified as a method used by criminal networks to convert illicit funds into digital assets that appear legitimate once mined. Past research has shown how mining related transactions have occasionally overlapped with funds tied to scams or ransomware activity.
This raid follows other recent efforts by authorities to target cryptocurrency networks allegedly used by cartels to move drug trafficking proceeds across borders, reflecting increased scrutiny of digital assets in organized crime investigations.
