Moldova’s Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced his resignation on Friday, a move that also triggers the resignation of his entire government. Munteanu, who had led the European Union candidate nation since November 2025, offered no detailed explanation, saying only that he could no longer carry out his role in line with his principles.
Comes Amid Public Backlash Over State Salaries
The resignation follows public outcry after media reports revealed unusually high salaries at MoldATSA, the state airspace security agency, and other state owned companies. Political analyst Vitaliy Andriyevskiy described the situation as an acute governance crisis for Moldova, one of Europe’s poorest countries.
President Sandu To Consult On Successor
President Maia Sandu said Munteanu will remain in his post until a new prime minister is appointed, with consultations among parliamentary factions expected next week.

She thanked Munteanu for pursuing what she called difficult but necessary reforms and denied claims he was blocked from addressing abuses, saying he had full freedom to run the government and chose to step down voluntarily.
PAS Retains Parliamentary Majority
Munteanu, 62, took office after his pro European party, PAS, won a decisive election victory in September 2025 over a Russia-leaning rival. He previously spent about two decades working abroad, including at the World Bank. Sandu reaffirmed that Moldova’s path toward EU membership remains unchanged despite the political shake-up.
