Musk Warns of AI Neocloud Shakeout as SpaceX Raises $40 Billion in Debt for GPUs
Nasdaq-listed SpaceX has raised $40 billion in debt to buy GPUs, the processors that power artificial intelligence systems. Elon Musk revealed the deal on X and paired it with a warning for neoclouds, which are firms that earn almost all of their revenue from data centers. Most of the money comes as callable debt, so SpaceX can pay it back early. Musk did not say what the funds will cover, but GPU deliveries are expected in the first half of 2027. Reuters had earlier reported that the company was talking to banks and asset managers about financing Nvidia chips.

Why SpaceX Can Borrow While Neoclouds Struggle
Musk said SpaceX qualified because of its strong credit rating and steady income from Starlink and rocket launches, none of which rely on AI data centers. He added that debt markets have almost fully closed their doors in recent weeks to companies without large revenue outside AI data centers. He expects more than 200 neoclouds, the newer firms that rent out computing power, to consolidate until only a few remain.
Neocloud Funding Concerns and AI Market Jitters
Venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya said many neoclouds look poorly funded and badly run. He noted that Amazon, Microsoft and Google are slow to sign deals and prefer to keep capacity for themselves, so building delays could leave chips and unfinished projects idle in 2027 and unable to cover financing costs. Worries about the return on huge AI spending are already weighing on tech stocks, with Nasdaq futures near 29,080, down from above 30,000 earlier this month.
