NBA Signs Prediction Markets Deal With US Regulator While the NFL Pushes Back

The National Basketball Association has reached a data sharing agreement with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, joining Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League, which struck similar deals earlier. The pact, announced Monday, comes with limits meant to protect the integrity of betting on game outcomes. The league also named Kalshi and Polymarket as its preferred exchanges. NBA executive Scott Kaufman Ross said working with regulators and operators is important so that proper safeguards exist while the category grows. CFTC Chairman Mike Selig called the move a responsible step against insider trading and fraud.

What Kalshi Says the Deal Includes

Kalshi said it and the league will exchange integrity data, flag suspicious trading and cooperate on investigations. The arrangement restricts which markets can be offered and clearly bars league and team staff from trading NBA event contracts.

NFL Sides With States in Prediction Market Legal Fight

The football league has taken the opposite path. In a filing asking the US Supreme Court to step in, it sided with state governments and argued that federal oversight has been lax and understaffed. It also said prediction platforms do not face the same strict rules that state gaming authorities impose. Several states claim this kind of betting belongs under their gambling laws, and three major federal court rulings have split on the question, with two favoring the states.
