Nepal-China Border Mudslide Leaves Hundreds Dead, Thousands Missing

A massive mudslide triggered by a glacier collapse along the Nepal China border has killed hundreds of people, with thousands more still unaccounted for, officials confirmed Sunday.

Chinese authorities in the Tibet Autonomous Region reported 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries missing on their side of the border, with Nepal accounting for the largest share at 104, followed by India, Latvia, the United States, and Britain. Sixteen deaths have been confirmed in Gyirong County, with 546 people still missing there.

Nepal Reports Higher Casualties

On the Nepalese side, disaster officials said at least 675 people died, 2,498 remain missing, and over 7,500 have been rescued so far. Rising water levels in the Trishuli River have forced rescue teams and residents to retreat to higher ground.

Climate Change Cited as Contributing Factor

Chinese state media linked the disaster to long-term glacier instability caused by global warming. China has sent over 2,100 rescue workers and pledged roughly $32.7 million in aid to support relief efforts. The Red Cross estimates more than 90,000 people have been affected overall.
