She was stabbed in the abdomen during an incident at the intersection of 41st Street and Seventh Avenue on Monday afternoon. Her husband, 68, was also attacked and is expected to survive.
Suspect Pulled Knives From Shopping Bag
Police say the attacker, a 49-year-old Queens woman, retrieved two knives from a shopping bag before striking both victims without warning. Witnesses reported hearing her repeat a phrase suggesting distress just before the assault began.
Standoff Ends in Police Shooting
Officers reportedly spent several minutes attempting to communicate with the woman while she remained armed, eventually using a taser in an effort to subdue her. When she continued advancing toward officers with the knives still in hand, police opened fire. She was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after.
Authorities noted the suspect had a documented history of mental illness along with prior contact with police dating back several years.
