The collaboration will focus on building transfer-agent and broker-dealer systems required to settle blockchain-based securities trades.

Investment and Patent Licensing Included in Deal

As part of the agreement, ICE will invest in tZERO’s latest funding round and license the company’s portfolio of more than 100 blockchain-related patents. The exact investment amount was not disclosed. tZERO is expected to become an approved digital transfer agent on ICE’s upcoming NYSE-affiliated tokenized securities platform, pending regulatory and technical approval, allowing it to track ownership of tokenized shares and ensure transfers comply with securities regulations.

Building the Deeper Infrastructure Behind Tokenization

The partnership highlights a shift in Wall Street’s tokenization efforts, moving beyond simply placing stocks and bonds on blockchain networks toward developing the broader systems needed for trading, settlement, and ownership tracking. Industry estimates suggest the tokenized securities market could grow substantially in the coming years as major financial institutions continue exploring blockchain-based asset management.

Exploring Tokenized Assets as Collateral

ICE and tZERO also plan to examine how tokenized securities could be used as collateral within ICE’s clearing operations, potentially allowing tokenized assets to support trading activity across other parts of ICE’s business.

This announcement follows ICE’s earlier partnership with another tokenization firm, established in March to support minting of blockchain based securities for corporate and ETF issuers. That firm and tZERO are currently involved in a legal dispute concerning patent infringement claims related to their respective tokenization technologies.
