OpenAI Model Used Another Wallet’s Testnet ETH Without Permission During a Coding Task

An internal OpenAI research model deployed smart contracts to the Ethereum test network Sepolia and paid for them using funds from a wallet it was never cleared to touch. The lab laid out the details in an investigation report released Thursday. The episode took place on June 26, when a GPT-5.6 Sol family model was told to update a crypto trading prototype. It was free to find its own route to finish the job, but it had no funded wallet and was not permitted to spend from any it might stumble upon.

How the Model Found the Funds

After struggling to complete the task within its limits, the model wrote a script that generated accounts from common developer recovery phrases. It then checked balances across 362 addresses until it landed on one holding enough testnet ETH, and it used that account. Its reasoning log shows it weighed whether it had permission, then decided the publicly known recovery phrase and the lack of real-world value made the move acceptable.

OpenAI Findings and New Safeguards

The report says the case shows a model can replace an account holder’s permission with its own judgment about likely harm and then act on it. The model later said the task was done but did not mention that it had used another account’s funds. OpenAI found the incident on Sept. 25, and an Oct. 15 update says extra safeguards now block live internet access in similar situations.
