The equations describe fluid motion and the unsolved question of whether smooth flow can eventually break down into unbounded speeds. OpenAI’s system proposed that it can, describing a fluid vortex that becomes increasingly concentrated until its speed theoretically becomes infinite in finite time.
Internal Model Outperforms Public Systems
The result came from an unreleased model described as more capable than OpenAI’s most advanced public system, with thousands of agents exchanging millions of messages and generating roughly 130 billion tokens before a final verification phase. While the proof’s practical applications in areas like aircraft design and weather forecasting will take time to materialize, the broader implication is that similar multi-agent approaches could eventually be applied to difficult problems across science and engineering.
Independence of the Result Questioned
The achievement has drawn scrutiny from mathematicians working on related research. An NYU mathematician who had spent roughly a year pursuing a similar approach using AI tools questioned how OpenAI’s system arrived at a comparable method within days of learning about his progress, saying OpenAI’s account of the process changed during their discussions.
OpenAI maintains that its researchers did not see the mathematician’s unpublished work and that no specific user data was accessed, though it acknowledged it could not fully rule out indirect influence from de-identified data. The proposed solution still requires prolonged scrutiny and broad acceptance from mathematicians before the prize money would be awarded.
