OpenClaw Developers Targeted by Phishing Scam Offering Fake ‘CLAW’ Tokens

Developers of OpenClaw, an open-source AI project, are facing a phishing attack using fake token rewards to lure users into connecting crypto wallets. Cybersecurity firm OX Security reported the scam on Wednesday, confirming no victims so far. Attackers created fake GitHub accounts and repositories, tagging developers to increase visibility, while claiming recipients had won $5,000 worth of a non-existent “CLAW” cryptocurrency.

Cloned Websites and Wallet Connection Tricks

The phishing posts directed developers to a cloned website mimicking OpenClaw’s official page, prompting users to connect wallets. This tactic is commonly used to steal credentials or gain unauthorized wallet access. OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger warned on X that the project would never launch a cryptocurrency and urged users to rely only on the official site.

OpenClaw Project Popularity and Anti-Scam Measures

Launched in November 2025, OpenClaw is an autonomous AI agent for managing files, software, and browser tasks via platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram. Its open-source nature and viral adoption—over 465,000 X subscribers—have made it a target for scams. The project has implemented measures to protect the community, including banning crypto discussions in its official Discord channel to reduce phishing risks.
