Patagonia Emerges as Surprise Hotspot for Global Data Center Investment

Argentina's Patagonia region is attracting mega data center investors thanks to its cool weather, renewable energy, shale gas reserves, and vast empty land. Unlike the U.S., where such projects face backlash over grid strain, Argentina's developments are progressing quietly with little public resistance so far.

Neuquen Leads Early Development

Energy firm Pampa Energia is planning a 500-megawatt facility near Vaca Muerta’s shale gas fields, targeting initial agreements by late 2026, starting with a smaller 20-40 MW pilot. Infrastructure costs for full buildout are estimated near $900 million.

Reforms Boost Investor Confidence

Under President Javier Milei’s tax-friendly RIGI program, Argentina has drawn major investment, including a $25 billion clean energy project backed by OpenAI. Other provinces, including Chubut and Buenos Aires, are also pursuing similar projects.

Experts caution that infrastructure gaps and political uncertainty, including the 2027 election, could slow momentum despite growing global interest.
