Petrobras Uses Cardano to Track Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Renewable Diesel
Brazilian statencontrolled oil company Petrobras has built two Cardano-based applications to track sustainability data for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and its renewable fuel, Diesel R, according to the Cardano Foundation. The work is part of a research collaboration that began in 2023 with blockchain training for employees and grew in 2025 to energy research with PUC-Rio's Ledger Labs. No fuel volumes or rollout timeline were shared.

How the SAF Tokenization App Works
Book-and-Claim Model and CS-SAF Tokens
The first app, built with Ledger Labs, turns environmental attributes of SAF into CS-SAF tokens so the same claim cannot be used twice. Under the Book-and-Claim model, the benefit can be separated from the physical fuel and assigned to an airline, company or passenger. The token metadata follows CORSIA standards, and passengers can claim tokens and get a certificate tied to their trip.
Diesel R Tracking and Scope 3 Reporting
The second app sets digital checkpoints for production, transport and use of Diesel R. The data could support Scope 3 reporting on indirect emissions.
Blockchain in Sustainable Aviation Fuel Tracking
Shell’s Avelia platform, launched in 2022, has helped put over 84 million gallons of SAF into the global network and abated more than 780,000 tonnes of CO₂e through June 2026. Australia’s Viva Energy also signed a January deal with NoviqTech to study digital Book-and-Claim systems.
