Poland Fails to Override Crypto Bill Veto as Zondacrypto Scandal Deepens

Polish lawmakers once again failed to secure enough votes to override President Karol Nawrocki's veto of legislation intended to strengthen oversight of the country's crypto market. The vote fell notably short of the three-fifths majority required, marking the latest setback in a prolonged standoff between parliament and the president over how strictly Poland should regulate digital assets.

Polish lawmakers once again failed to secure enough votes to override President Karol Nawrocki’s veto of legislation intended to strengthen oversight of the country’s crypto market. The vote fell notably short of the three-fifths majority required, marking the latest setback in a prolonged standoff between parliament and the president over how strictly Poland should regulate digital assets.

This marks the third time Nawrocki has vetoed similar crypto legislation, arguing that the proposed framework would place excessive regulatory burdens on the industry, despite stating general support for crypto oversight in principle.

Poland Still Lacks Formal Crypto Regulator

The rejected legislation aimed to establish Poland’s national framework for implementing the European Union’s crypto asset regulations, including designating the country’s financial supervisory authority as the primary regulator for digital asset markets. Regulatory officials confirmed that Poland currently has no formally designated authority overseeing crypto markets, even though EU-wide rules already apply.

The president has cited concerns over regulatory costs and expanded government authority to block websites as reasons for his continued opposition to the bill.

Zondacrypto Investigation Widens Amid Bankruptcy Proceedings

The regulatory dispute comes as a separate scandal involving a now defunct Polish crypto exchange continues to escalate, with its Estonian-based operator officially declared bankrupt last month. Poland’s prime minister recently disclosed testimony details from the ongoing investigation, alleging financial payments and attempts to influence political figures connected to a previous government.

Prosecutors are investigating suspected fraud and money laundering tied to the exchange, with the case now merged with an earlier investigation into the disappearance of the platform’s original founder. Estimated financial losses linked to the case have reached tens of millions of dollars, according to prosecutors.
