Abstract, a consumer focused Ethereum layer-2 network built by Igloo Inc., the parent of Pudgy Penguins, will close this year after failing to scale or find product-market fit. The team said on X that its focus on consumer crypto turned out to be an unsustainable business model.

Abstract launched its mainnet in January 2025 with the goal of bringing mainstream entertainment audiences into crypto and removing much of the complexity of traditional blockchains. Igloo CEO Luca Netz revealed that his company had quietly funded the project for 18 months. He said it lost tens of millions of dollars over two years, even after building consumer products, assembling a strong team, signing major brands and growing a community of millions.

Why Abstract Failed to Gain Traction

The shutdown exposes the limits of a consumer-first approach. Abstract and Netz pointed to minimal institutional crossover, thin liquidity and a narrow DeFi ecosystem as obstacles. This happened even though more than 144 apps were deployed on the chain, over 400,000 users joined and partnerships were signed with Red Bull Racing and Disney.

How to Bridge Funds Before the Dec. 15 Deadline

The network will go offline on Dec. 15, 2026. Users should move their assets off the chain through the Migration Hub or the Native Bridge, since any funds left behind after the deadline will be inaccessible. The engineering and ecosystem team will help Abstract-based projects migrate to other chains.

Other Blockchains Winding Down in 2026

Abstract joins a growing list of networks closing this year. Ethereum layer-2 Blast said last week that its operating costs outpaced revenue, and Bitcoin-focused Botanix announced its closure in June after failing to find enough product-market fit.
