Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday there is a genuine chance of reaching a peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine, while Ukrainian officials suggested diplomatic efforts may be entering a fresh, more active phase. Speaking at an economic forum in Russia’s far east, Putin noted that several countries, including the US and China, appear willing to support a potential settlement, though he emphasized that the core resolution must come from Russia and Ukraine themselves.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister echoed a similarly hopeful tone, stating that renewed diplomatic engagement across multiple countries could soon reshape the peace process, though he offered no specific details.

Optimism Comes Despite Rising Tensions

The comments mark a rare moment of positive rhetoric after more than four years of conflict, especially since both nations have recently escalated long-range attacks on each other’s territory and expanded hostilities at sea, including strikes on ports and commercial shipping that have driven up global grain prices. Following Putin’s remarks, wheat futures in Chicago dropped more than 2%.

Despite the hopeful tone, Putin also pointed to recent Ukrainian actions, including attacks on commercial ships and warnings about airspace safety, as complicating factors that could hinder progress toward a bilateral agreement. Ukraine has separately called on international aviation authorities to restrict operations over Russian airspace, citing safety concerns tied to the ongoing war.

Meanwhile, India’s Foreign Minister reiterated his country’s willingness to assist in peace efforts, following earlier remarks from India’s Prime Minister urging an end to the war.
