Bigger Targets Than Satoshi’s Bitcoin
While many assume Satoshi Nakamoto’s billions in dormant Bitcoin would be the first target, Smith believes attackers would go after more strategic prizes, such as Tether’s minting authority, which could allow fake tokens to be created and sold before anyone notices. Blockchain Capital’s Sean Cheetham added that quiet attacks on exchange hot wallets are more likely than a dramatic, high-profile theft.
No Clear Timeline for “Q-Day”
Predictions vary widely. Smith gives roughly even odds of a breakthrough by 2028, Cheetham leans toward the early 2030s, and Solana’s Michael Coates says no one truly knows. Despite the uncertainty, blockchain networks are already shifting toward quantum-resistant security.
