U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday the United States is still open to negotiating an end to the Iran crisis, but accused Tehran of not being serious about talks. His remarks came a day after three Saudi crude tankers bound for China and India reversed course in the Red Sea following threats from Yemen’s Houthi forces.
Houthi Blockade Adds New Pressure
The Houthis, who control territory near the Red Sea’s entrance, declared a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia this week, opening another front in a war that began in February and has killed thousands across the Gulf region. With Iran also threatening the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea has been a key alternate route for Saudi oil shipments.
Diplomatic Efforts Continue Quietly
An Iranian official said mediators had proposed a 10-day ceasefire to preserve the interim agreement reached in June. Iran’s Interior Minister also met Pakistani officials to keep mediation efforts alive.
Rubio Warns on Shipping Control
Speaking in Manila, Rubio said the US remains committed to diplomacy but questioned Iran’s intentions. He warned that letting any nation control an international waterway would set a dangerous global precedent, including in Asia.
