Saudi Arabia Expands Missile Factory to Build Heavier, Longer Range Weapons

Two researchers, Sam Lair and Michael Duitsman of the Foreign Policy Research Institute, studied more than a year of commercial satellite photos of the missile complex in al Duwadimi, about 200 kilometers west of Riyadh. Their analysis found a new building with casting pits, the wells where fuel mixture is poured into missile motor casings. The structure is at least twice the size of the one believed to house the plant's existing pits, and it sits between protective walls meant to limit damage from accidental explosions.

Why Bigger Missiles Matter

The researchers believe the expansion could allow Saudi Arabia to build solid fuel missiles that fly farther or carry heavier loads. Experts who reviewed the findings say the kingdom may be relying on Chinese designs, possibly the DF-15 or the longer range DF-21. The facility could start producing missiles as early as the end of this year once casting equipment is installed.

Wider Impact on the Region and Washington

Stronger missiles could help Riyadh deter Iran and strengthen its position in its conflict with Houthi forces in Yemen. The buildup could also fuel a regional arms race and add to opposition in Congress to a proposed nuclear cooperation deal between the United States and Saudi Arabia. The Saudi government has not commented on the findings.
