SEC 2027 Exam Priorities: Tokenization Gets Attention While Crypto Gets Left Out

The Securities and Exchange Commission has put tokenization on its list of fiscal 2027 examination priorities, released Friday. The topic did not appear by name in last year's list, so its arrival shows how quickly regulators are shifting their focus toward securities issued on blockchain networks.

Tokenized Securities Under Regulation SCI

The agency says its Regulation SCI reviews, which cover the security and reliability of critical market infrastructure, will look closely at emerging trends. Tokenized securities sit on that list next to extended trading hours, quantum computing and what the Trump administration calls super intelligence, its term for artificial intelligence. Tokenization is also named as a high risk area for clearing agencies, along with default management, securities lending and operational risks.

Why Crypto Is Still Missing From the List

Digital assets have no standalone section for a second year in a row. The last time the SEC gave crypto its own category was in the fiscal 2025 priorities.

Wall Street Moves Into Tokenized Stocks

The timing matters because traditional finance is already moving in. Earlier this month, a joint venture between OKX and Intercontinental Exchange applied to launch a platform offering tokenized shares in more than 60 US listed companies, giving examiners a real market to watch.
