SEC Schedules Vote on New Regulation Crypto Framework
The Securities and Exchange Commission has scheduled a meeting for August 14 to formally propose Regulation Crypto, marking the agency's first significant rulemaking effort aimed at digital asset businesses. The three-member commission will vote to open the proposal for public comment, giving crypto firms a clearer legal pathway for issuing certain investment contracts without triggering full registration requirements.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has scheduled a meeting for August 14 to formally propose Regulation Crypto, marking the agency’s first significant rulemaking effort aimed at digital asset businesses. The three-member commission will vote to open the proposal for public comment, giving crypto firms a clearer legal pathway for issuing certain investment contracts without triggering full registration requirements.
Comes After Senate Setback on Crypto Legislation
The announcement follows closely after the Senate failed to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act before its summer break, a bill that was expected to establish broader legal groundwork for crypto market rules. Analysts see this SEC action as a direct response, with one market analyst noting the agency is likely to pursue several more rulemakings to provide regulatory certainty in the absence of congressional action.

Formal Rule Offers More Lasting Guidance
Unlike previous informal policy statements from the agency, a formal rule would carry more legal weight and be harder to reverse. The proposal is expected to allow crypto projects to raise capital while eventually giving businesses a way to exit SEC oversight once they’re no longer actively managing a project. The process will include a public comment period lasting several months before any final rule takes shape.
