Surrogacy Remains Banned Domestically

Spahn, 46, served as parliamentary leader for Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democrat party and its sister party. While surrogacy is prohibited within Germany itself, raising a child born through surrogacy abroad is not illegal under German law. In his resignation letter, Spahn explained that he had come to realize his personal happiness in starting a family with his husband was incompatible with continuing in his political role.

Party Stance Fueled Pressure to Resign

The controversy gained momentum after Spahn’s party voted earlier this year at its official conference to uphold Germany’s ban on surrogacy. Once news of his own path to parenthood became public, numerous voices within the party called for his resignation, ultimately leading to Saturday’s announcement
