Solana Rolls Out Faster Slots and Alpenglow, While Tokenized Assets Hit a Record

Solana’s Foundation has put out a single review of last month’s changes, published on Nov. 6. It covers two protocol updates that went live in October, a record level of tokenized real world assets and a widening list of payment integrations. The report is helpful because it separates infrastructure that is already running from products and partnerships still looking for wider adoption.

Slot Time Cut to 200 Milliseconds

SIMD-0525 Goes Live

A final stage of SIMD-0525 activated on Oct. 9 and halved the target slot time from 400 milliseconds to 200. A slot is the window in which a network leader produces a block, so shorter slots mean blocks arrive more often. That does not promise every transaction will confirm within 200 milliseconds, especially when the network is busy.

Alpenglow Replaces TowerBFT

On Oct. 21, Alpenglow took over from TowerBFT as the consensus system on mainnet. It aims for finality of about 150 milliseconds, meaning the point at which the network treats a transaction as fully settled. That is a different thing from how fast an app responds or how soon a merchant sees money in a bank account.

Real World Assets and Reliability Questions

The Foundation reports a record $5 billion in tokenized real world asset value. Slot time, finality and asset value measure different things, so none of them alone shows a better experience for every application. The roundup also does not treat Alpenglow as a second launch, since it only gives a broader, dated picture of how both changes fit together. Real reliability, as the review notes, can only be judged over time in production.
