Solana Triples Transaction Size Limit In Major Network Upgrade
Solana has more than tripled the amount of data a single transaction can carry, moving from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes under a new format called Transaction V1, which went live Tuesday around 01:00 UTC.

Solana has more than tripled the amount of data a single transaction can carry, moving from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes under a new format called Transaction V1, which went live Tuesday around 01:00 UTC.
Why The Change Matters
The upgrade gives developers more room to build complex trades, multi signature company wallet approvals and privacy focused applications using zero knowledge proofs. Previously, the tight byte limit forced developers to compress operations or split them across multiple transactions. This gap had been one of Solana’s few structural disadvantages compared to Ethereum, which has no hard protocol size cap and instead lets developers pay higher fees for larger, data heavy operations.

What Larger Transactions Enable
With more space available, developers can now combine several steps into a single all-or-nothing transaction, meaning the entire operation fails together if one step doesn’t succeed. This offers a stronger guarantee than bundling separate transactions, which lacks that same network level protection. The change affects how much data each transaction can hold, not how many transactions the network processes per second.
Compatibility Requirements
Wallets, trading platforms and analytics tools that read Solana data must now support the new format, or requests involving V1 transactions could fail. Older transaction formats remain supported, though systems still need updates to properly read newer ones.
