S&P Global has agreed to acquire OpenZeppelin, a blockchain security company known for auditing smart contracts and providing open source development tools. The acquisition is designed to strengthen the financial data and ratings giant’s growing presence in digital asset risk assessment. Terms of the deal, announced Thursday, were not disclosed, and the transaction still needs to clear standard closing conditions.
OpenZeppelin’s Track Record in Smart Contract Security
Since its founding in 2015, OpenZeppelin has built a reputation for securing blockchain infrastructure, with its smart contract libraries supporting more than $37 trillion in value transferred across various networks. The company has also carried out over 900 security reviews for blockchain projects and financial institutions worldwide.
Company Leadership and Open-Source Commitment to Continue
S&P Global confirmed that OpenZeppelin’s open-source tools, including its widely used contracts library, will remain free and publicly available on GitHub. The business will function as an independent unit within S&P Global, with current CEO Demian Brener staying on to lead operations.
Part of a Broader Digital Asset Expansion Strategy
This acquisition follows closely behind S&P Global’s investment in Kaiko earlier this week, a move that boosted the Paris-based crypto data provider’s funding round to $110 million. Together, these steps signal a deliberate strategy by S&P Global to build deeper infrastructure and credibility in tokenized and blockchain-based financial markets.
