StarkWare Releases Quantum-Resistant Roadmap, Says Crypto Industry Has No Excuse to Wait

Zero knowledge scaling firm StarkWare has unveiled a three-phase quantum resistant roadmap for Starknet, arguing that other blockchains have no justification for remaining vulnerable to future quantum computing threats. CEO Eli Ben-Sasson said proven cryptography already exists to secure crypto systems, and continued exposure stems only from inaction across the industry.

Growing Urgency Around Quantum Threats

Concerns are mounting as researchers warn that powerful quantum computers capable of breaking current encryption could emerge before 2030. While Bitcoin’s community remains split on how to protect older coins, other networks have started advancing their own quantum-resistant plans.

Starknet Leans on Existing Cryptographic Advantage

Ben Sasson said Starknet’s zero-knowledge STARK proof system is inherently resistant to quantum attacks, giving it a head start. He criticized reliance on elliptic-curve cryptography as a false sense of security, warning it leaves the industry dangerously unprepared.

Three-Phase Plan Outlined

The roadmap begins with replacing vulnerable hashing methods and adding quantum resistant signatures, followed by tools to automatically upgrade smart contracts. The final phase depends on broader progress from Ethereum’s own quantum roadmap, since Starknet’s infrastructure remains tied to it.
