A Norwegian court has sentenced Marius Borg Høiby, the stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, to four years in prison after finding him guilty of rape and domestic violence. The Oslo District Court ruled on Monday that the 29-year-old was guilty of two rape charges, including one incident that took place in the basement of the crown prince’s official residence. He was acquitted of two other rape allegations.
Prosecutors had requested a much longer sentence of over seven years, but the court imposed a four-year term after a seven-week trial that drew national attention.
Domestic Violence and Evidence Presented in Trial
The court also found Høiby guilty of repeated domestic abuse against a former girlfriend between mid-2022 and late 2023. Evidence presented during the trial included allegations that he hit her in the face, choked her, threw objects, and slammed a door on her.
Judges said the victims were unable to resist in several situations due to unconsciousness or incapacity. Høiby admitted to some lesser offences, including drug-related crimes and violating restraining orders, but denied the most serious charges.
Impact on Norway’s Royal Family Image
Although Høiby holds no royal title and has no official duties, the case has drawn widespread attention due to his close connection to Norway’s future king. The royal household said it had no comment, stating the matter had been handled by the courts.
The case comes at a sensitive time for the royal family, as Crown Princess Mette-Marit faces health challenges and the monarchy’s public approval has shown signs of decline in recent surveys. Authorities confirmed that both prosecution and defence may appeal the ruling.
