Telegram Founder Pavel Durov Links France Tax Data Leak to Surge in Crypto Kidnappings

Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, has linked a sharp increase in crypto-related kidnappings in France to alleged misuse of sensitive tax records. In a public statement, Durov claimed that leaked data involving cryptocurrency investors had enabled criminals to target victims more easily, stating that “more data equals more victims.”

Durov referenced approximately 41 reported kidnappings involving crypto holders in France since the start of 2026. He specifically cited the case of Ghalia C., who was detained in June 2025 after allegedly selling confidential data on crypto professionals and investors to criminal groups.

High-Profile Cases and Growing Security Concerns

Reports suggest that France is experiencing roughly one crypto related kidnapping every 2.5 days. One of the most widely reported incidents involved David Balland, who was kidnapped with his wife in January 2025 and suffered severe injuries during the attack.

French authorities have acknowledged the growing threat. Jean-Didier Berger stated during Paris Blockchain Week on April 16 that new measures are being introduced to protect cryptocurrency investors from kidnapping and extortion attempts.

Investigations and Ongoing Safety Warnings

Blockchain investigator ZachXBT said he has increased focus on such cases due to their rising frequency. Recent incidents include a home invasion in Ploudalmézeau involving multiple family members and a separate kidnapping in Burgundy, where a mother and her 11-year-old child were abducted and criminals demanded a ransom of 400,000 euros from the father, a crypto entrepreneur.

Durov added that concerns over data privacy remain central to the debate, warning that Telegram could consider limiting operations in France rather than granting authorities access to private user communications.
