Tether’s USDT Returns to Bitcoin Through Utexo With a Privacy-Focused Design
Tether's USDT, the world's largest stablecoin with a market cap near $190 billion, is expected to return to Bitcoin this month. It first launched there in 2014 on the Omni protocol, before Ethereum and Tron became its main homes. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino summed it up last week with the line "it's coming home." The return runs through Utexo, a Tether-backed project founded in 2025 that raised $7.5 million earlier this year.

Tether’s USDT, the world’s largest stablecoin with a market cap near $190 billion, is expected to return to Bitcoin this month. It first launched there in 2014 on the Omni protocol, before Ethereum and Tron became its main homes. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino summed it up last week with the line “it’s coming home.” The return runs through Utexo, a Tether-backed project founded in 2025 that raised $7.5 million earlier this year.
Co-founder Viktor Ihnatiuk said Utexo holds the commercial license to issue USDT on Bitcoin and bring it to exchanges, wallets and payment providers. Tether itself held about 100,000 BTC, or $8.4 billion, in mid-August.
How RGB Protocol Keeps USDT Transfers Private
Utexo uses the RGB protocol with client-side validation, so transaction data stays mostly off Bitcoin’s public ledger. Ownership is anchored in unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs), and the ledger only proves ownership. Planned uses are private transfers, direct BTC-to-USDT swaps and loans backed by native bitcoin without wrapping.
Freezing Limits and the Lightning Network Plan
Because RGB assets sit against UTXOs, Utexo cannot freeze them like an Ethereum address. It will keep a blacklist of UTXOs tied to illicit activity, making them unredeemable. Lightning support comes next, possibly with USDT as a fee token.
