Legal Framework Behind the Fee Claims

Federal agencies can be required to cover attorney fees when they lose in court under a 1980 law designed to help individuals, small businesses and nonprofits afford legal challenges against the government. One attorney representing clients in lawsuits over international student status revocations said the ability to hold government accountable through legal costs remains an important American principle. A federal judge in Florida also recently ordered fee payments after ruling that a lawsuit brought by the administration against the IRS was pursued in bad faith.
