Trump Administration Unveils $6 Billion Science Push With Quantum and AI Funding

The Trump administration has announced more than $6 billion in science initiatives, including a $215 million quantum computing competition and $2.4 billion in industry commitments for artificial intelligence tools and computing resources. On Thursday, the Department of Energy named eight scientific applications to guide its Quantum Genesis Q Competition, which offers up to $215 million in planned funding for companies building fault tolerant quantum computers.

On Thursday, the Department of Energy named eight scientific applications to guide its Quantum Genesis Q Competition, which offers up to $215 million in planned funding for companies building fault tolerant quantum computers.

Announced in September, the program includes milestone-based awards and incentive prizes for firms that show increasingly powerful quantum systems. Research priorities cover chemistry, materials science, subatomic physics and applied mathematics.

AI Industry Commitments for Federal Research

Eleven technology companies pledged $2.4 billion in AI tools and compute credits to support research at 15 federal agencies. Nvidia committed $1 billion, AMD $500 million, OpenAI $200 million, and Anthropic and Google $150 million each.

Quantum Computing Risks for Crypto Security

Progress in fault tolerant quantum computing could matter for blockchain assets that depend on public-key cryptography. On Sept. 23, three EU financial watchdogs warned that more powerful quantum machines could undermine the cryptographic systems securing blockchains and financial transactions. A strong enough quantum computer could derive private keys from exposed public keys and let attackers steal funds, though no machine capable of such an attack exists today.
