President Trump has agreed to accept most of a stricter ethics proposal tied to the Clarity Act, helping clear the way for a critical Senate vote set for Tuesday. The decision follows weeks of pushback from lawmakers who wanted stronger safeguards before backing the bill.
Republicans Confirm The Deal
Three senior Republicans told reporters that Trump signed off on close to 80% of the ethics package proposed by a group of senators. Several Democrats, along with Republican Senator Thom Tillis, had refused to support the bill earlier, pushing for tighter conflict-of-interest rules connected to Trump’s personal crypto holdings.
New Rules On Enforcement And Disclosure
Under the revised deal, state attorneys general will now have the authority to enforce the law alongside the Justice Department, including the power to take legal action against crypto exchanges that list digital assets banned under the bill. On top of that, elected officials, their spouses, and federal judges will need to sell off or place in a blind trust any significant financial stake tied to companies that issue crypto assets.
A White House crypto adviser said over the weekend that after more than a year of talks, the bill is finally ready to move forward. Senators are expected to hold a procedural vote this week that will decide whether the legislation advances further.
