Negotiations Collapse, New Tariffs Take Effect

Talks between the two countries broke down Friday in Washington, triggering new 50% US tariffs affecting roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, or about 5.5% of the country’s total exports to the US. Affected products range from hockey sticks to cement. Carney responded firmly, stating, “You’re at war when you get attacked. We got attacked.”

Trump Doubles Down on Social Media

In a post on Truth Social, Trump accused Canada of imposing “massive amounts of tariffs” on American farmers for years, declaring an end to that treatment. Canada’s new retaliatory tariffs, targeting US steel and dairy industries, are set to take effect September 8, with further details expected in the coming week.

Carney Says US Terms Were Unacceptable

Despite earlier positive discussions, Carney said the US introduced last-minute conditions that were unfair and undermined Canada’s interests, calling the reliability of any resulting deal into question. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer countered that Washington had offered to reduce tariffs on steel, aluminum, and autos, along with eliminating a recent lumber tariff, calling it the most favorable treatment offered to any trading partner. Greer confirmed no further talks are currently planned.

Economic Strain Continues

Canada has been seeking relief from tariffs that have significantly impacted its auto, steel, and aluminum sectors, contributing to job losses and straining what was previously a close trade relationship between the two nations.
