Trump Says Iran Deal Near as Strait of Hormuz Reopening Faces Dispute

US President Donald Trump said a peace agreement with Iran has been “largely negotiated,” raising hopes for an end to the three month conflict that disrupted global energy markets. Trump claimed the proposed memorandum of understanding would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes for oil and gas.

However, Iranian media quickly challenged that statement. Iran’s Fars news agency reported that Tehran would continue managing the strait, calling Trump’s claim about reopening the passage “inconsistent with reality.”

Iran Nuclear Program Remains Key Sticking Point

Reports suggest negotiations are focused heavily on Iran’s nuclear program. According to officials familiar with the talks, the draft framework could include commitments from Iran to avoid developing nuclear weapons and discuss limits on uranium enrichment.

In exchange, the United States may ease sanctions and lift restrictions on Iranian ports. Pakistan, acting as a mediator, described recent negotiations as “encouraging,” though officials admitted important disagreements remain unresolved.

Strait of Hormuz Crisis Still Uncertain

The Strait of Hormuz closure has affected global shipping and energy prices since fighting escalated earlier this year. Iranian officials said discussions are moving forward, but warned several major issues still need further mediation before any final agreement is announced.
