Trump Threatens Major Tariffs On EU Over $1 Billion Google Fine
President Donald Trump has warned of substantial new tariffs against the European Union after the bloc fined Google $1 billion for violating online competition rules. The penalty marks the first major enforcement action against a tech giant under the EU's Digital Markets Act, which aims to curb the dominance of large technology companies.

President Donald Trump has warned of substantial new tariffs against the European Union after the bloc fined Google $1 billion for violating online competition rules. The penalty marks the first major enforcement action against a tech giant under the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which aims to curb the dominance of large technology companies.
Trump Accuses EU Of Targeting American Companies
Trump accused the European Union of deliberately targeting major US companies, pointing to previous fines against Apple, Meta, and Amazon. Writing on Truth Social, he said the EU would face a heavy cost for what he called illegal and unethical conduct, adding that he expects the penalties to be reversed and a significant tariff imposed soon.

EU Cites Two Separate Violations
The European Commission’s fine stems from two breaches of the Digital Markets Act, including a 460 million euro penalty for favoring Google’s own services in travel search results, and a 430 million euro fine over Play Store rules that limited visibility of cheaper competitor offers. The move follows Trump’s broader tariff plan announced Thursday, which places new import taxes of 10 to 12.5 percent on goods from 60 countries.
