Two Spanish High Speed Trains Collide Near Toledo, Leaving at Least 68 Dead
At least 68 people died on Wednesday morning when two high-speed trains collided south of Madrid, between the towns of Mora and Orgaz. Regional officials gave the toll while rescuers kept searching carriage by carriage. Several carriages derailed and at least three slid down an embankment. It is the deadliest rail accident in Europe since the 2013 Santiago de Compostela crash that killed 80. Officials said 147 passengers were on the Iryo train and 397 on the Renfe train, and the health minister urged people to donate blood.

Signal Failure Behind the Collision
Transport Minister Oscar Puente said a computer communications fault triggered a red signal because an Iryo train was stationary ahead. A wrong decision then allowed the Renfe train to continue, which broke protocol. Renfe says its train proceeded as instructed and that the investigation must establish the full sequence.
Survivors and Rescue Response
Passengers described a heavy thud lasting about ten seconds, and one survivor saw part of a train hanging down the slope with a fire in a carriage. Emergency teams arrived within roughly 20 minutes.
Second Major Rail Disaster in Spain This Year
A January crash near Adamuz in Cordoba province killed 46 people on the same line, and its cause is still under investigation. Accidents rose from 45 in 2016 to 69 last year, and only about 16% of high speed rail spending went to maintenance. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez headed to the scene, and the opposition cancelled campaign events ahead of the November 29 election.
