Uber and Wayve Debut London’s First Robotaxi Service

Uber has launched autonomous ride services in London using self-driving technology developed by British AI company Wayve, making the city the second in Europe to offer robotaxi rides. At launch, a licensed safety operator will remain in the vehicle to monitor its performance before fully driverless operations begin at a later stage.

Riders booking standard Uber options may be matched with a Wayve powered electric vehicle at no extra cost, though fewer than 20 cars will be available during this initial rollout.

Regulatory Hurdles Remain Before Full Driverless Rollout

Despite the launch, full driverless operations in London still face regulatory delays, particularly from the city’s transport authorization body. Uber’s autonomous mobility lead said the move is aimed at building public and government confidence in the technology ahead of wider deployment.

UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander called the launch a major milestone for the future of transportation in the city, highlighting the role of British innovation in bringing the technology to public roads.

Wayve’s AI Driver Designed to Adapt Like a Human

According to the companies, Wayve’s AI Driver system learns through experience, allowing it to adjust to different roads, vehicles, weather conditions and cities over time. Uber and Wayve first partnered in 2024, with plans to expand Wayve-powered autonomous vehicles into additional markets in the future.
