UK Government Announces £251m Funding Boost for Jewish Community Safety

Police forces across England will receive £251 million in new funding aimed at protecting Jewish communities, following a rise in antisemitic incidents, the UK government has confirmed. The Metropolitan Police alone will get £86 million to hire around 300 additional officers, increasing patrols near synagogues, schools, and community centers in Jewish neighborhoods.

Recent Attacks Prompt Response

The funding comes after several antisemitic incidents in London, including a stabbing attack in Golders Green in April, and follows the national terror threat level being raised from substantial to severe.Formar Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the investment would bring about a meaningful shift in how Jewish communities are protected.

Funding Spread Across Multiple Regions

Greater Manchester Police will receive £22 million to maintain heightened policing following last year’s attack in Heaton Park, in which two men were killed. Seven other force areas with significant Jewish populations, including Hertfordshire, Essex, and West Yorkshire, will share roughly £43 million. An additional £41 million is earmarked for national coordination and antisemitism training, with £59 million going to counter-terrorism policing.

Community Reaction

Mark Gardner of the Community Security Trust welcomed the announcement, saying the support was needed urgently. The package builds on an earlier £25 million emergency fund issued in April, along with previously confirmed funding for protective security at Jewish sites and school-based programs to address antisemitism.
