Four years after Ukrainian forces surrendered Mariupol following a devastating siege, the rebuilt Azov Corps is intensifying strikes against Russian positions around the occupied port city.
Last week, drones operated by the First Corps Azov targeted electrical substations, repair facilities and a sanctioned vessel in Mariupol’s seaport, causing a blackout, according to Ukraine’s military. Reuters verified parts of the footage released by the unit.
Col. Arsen Dmytryk, Azov’s chief of staff and a former prisoner of war, said the operation was part of a broader campaign aimed at disrupting Russian military logistics and weakening Moscow’s ability to sustain its war effort.

Focus on Fuel Routes and Supply Networks
Azov has concentrated on attacking key transport routes linking Mariupol, Donetsk and the Russian city of Rostov. The unit says fuel shipments and military cargo moving through these corridors are primary targets.
Drones Play Central Role
Among the technologies being used is the AI-assisted Hornet drone developed by Perennial Autonomy, a defense technology company founded by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt. According to military analysts, Azov has helped improve the drone’s capabilities and range.
Dmytryk acknowledged that retaking Mariupol remains a long-term goal but said the corps is preparing for future operations while continuing efforts to pressure Russian forces and support the release of more than 700 captured Azov fighters.
