Uniswap Governance Set to Vote on New Fees That Could Boost UNI Token Burns

Uniswap's governance community is preparing to vote on activating protocol fees for select v4 pools for the very first time, alongside a separate plan to extend existing v2 and v3 fees to Robinhood Chain. Both proposals cleared submission and move to final onchain voting starting Sunday, running through July 26.

Uniswap’s governance community is preparing to vote on activating protocol fees for select v4 pools for the very first time, alongside a separate plan to extend existing v2 and v3 fees to Robinhood Chain. Both proposals cleared submission and move to final onchain voting starting Sunday, running through July 26.

Founder Expects Big Impact on Token Burn

Uniswap founder Hayden Adams pointed to strong trading activity, particularly on Robinhood Chain, saying he expects the effect on UNI token burning to be significant. The first proposal would turn on fees across three types of v4 pools, covering static-fee pools, auction-launched pools, and aggregator-hook pools, spanning networks including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, BNB Chain, Polygon, Optimism and Robinhood Chain. Because of a technical limit on how many actions a single proposal can include, a follow-up proposal covering five additional chains is expected later.

Robinhood Chain Already Seeing Heavy Volume

The second proposal, also submitted by Adams, would activate v2 and v3 fees specifically on Robinhood Chain, where Uniswap launched all three protocol versions back on July 1. Combined swap volume across those deployments has already surpassed $6 billion. Robinhood Chain itself pulled in roughly $3.1 billion in trading volume during its first week live, with early activity driven heavily by memecoin trading.

Fees Feed Into Existing Burn Mechanism

Any fees collected through these new proposals would flow into the token burn system created under a major governance overhaul passed in December with near-unanimous support. That original vote activated fees for v2 and v3 pools on Ethereum and resulted in burning 100 million UNI tokens from the treasury, though it left v4 fee activation for a future decision. Since then, the fee rollout has expanded to 11 different blockchain networks, with a record single-day burn of 186,000 UNI tokens recorded last month.

New Technical Framework Needed for v4

Turning on fees for v4 pools required building new infrastructure, since v4’s flexible hook system allows fees to change block by block, unlike the fixed fee structures used in earlier versions. The new proposal introduces a governance-managed system that groups pools into categories and calculates fees based on defined rules rather than handling each pool individually. Both votes are moving through an expedited governance process approved as part of December’s overhaul, skipping an earlier discussion phase in favor of a shorter voting timeline.

UNI currently trades around $3.52, largely unchanged over the past day.
