The Trump administration announced new restrictions on Tuesday targeting imports of Chinese made humanoid robots and power inverters, citing national security concerns tied to America’s growing AI infrastructure.
FCC Announces New Import Restrictions
The Federal Communications Commission confirmed the measures block imports of new Chinese humanoid and quadruped robots, along with connected power inverters used to link renewable energy systems and batteries to power grids and data centers. Officials said the devices could expose supply chains to disruption, data theft and cyberattacks, threatening critical U.S. infrastructure. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said the agency would continue working to secure the country’s supply chains.

China Pushes Back Against the Move
The Chinese embassy in Washington urged the U.S. to listen to business voices from both countries and stop targeting Chinese firms with sanctions, warning that Beijing would respond to any action harming its interests.
Robot Maker Unitree Likely Affected
The restrictions are expected to significantly impact Unitree, a major player controlling nearly one-fifth of the global humanoid robot market. The company was recently added to a Pentagon list of firms allegedly tied to China’s military. Regulators said robots could gather sensitive data that foreign intelligence services might exploit or use to remotely control devices.
Inverter Ban Targets Leading Chinese Suppliers
China remains the world’s top inverter producer, led by Sungrow Power Supply and Huawei. The ban follows similar action in Europe and concerns over malware risks tied to Chinese made grid equipment. The new rules apply only to unreleased models, though the FCC retains authority to revoke approval for previously authorized products.
