US-Iran Standoff Exposes Limits of Trump’s Coercive Diplomacy Strategy

President Donald Trump’s “coercive diplomacy” toward Iran has reached a stalemate, as his use of threats, ultimatums, and public pressure has failed to bring a quick breakthrough in the 11-week-old conflict. The approach previously helped him win concessions in other disputes, but with Iran it is not producing results.

Analysts say Iran is resisting by relying on domestic political strength and control over strategic energy routes, especially the Strait of Hormuz, which remains a key pressure point for global oil supply.

Conflicting messaging slows chances of a deal

Trump has used strong and often shifting language, including threats of “unconditional surrender” and harsh remarks about Iran’s leadership. At the same time, he has also hinted at negotiation, which experts say creates mixed signals and weakens diplomatic clarity.

Former negotiator Rob Malley said no government can accept being seen as having “capitulated.” Other former officials, including Dennis Ross and Barbara Leaf, warned that inconsistent messaging and unrealistic expectations are making a settlement harder.

Iranian officials, including Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh, have also pushed back, saying the U.S. rhetoric is excessive.

Energy risks and long conflict outlook

The deadlock is increasing fears that the crisis could last longer and continue to disrupt global energy markets. Analysts warn that Iran’s leverage over the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing instability could keep oil prices volatile. Some experts also suggest Trump’s pressure strategy could backfire by pushing Iran toward stronger long term resistance instead of compromise.
