US Treasury Signals Progress on Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and CLARITY Act

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the government is moving forward with plans to establish a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and Digital Asset Stockpile, following an executive order issued by President Donald Trump in 2025.

Speaking during a Senate Finance Committee hearing on the Treasury Department’s fiscal year 2027 budget, Bessent stated that officials are proceeding “with all deliberate speed” to implement the initiative. He described the reserve as part of a broader digital asset strategy and emphasized the importance of creating a durable framework for the future.

The United States currently holds approximately 328,372 Bitcoin, valued at around $215 billion, largely from assets seized through government enforcement actions. Treasury officials have not announced plans for additional Bitcoin purchases.

CLARITY Act Gains Momentum in Senate

Bessent also expressed support for the Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act, which aims to establish clearer regulations for cryptocurrencies and digital assets in the United States.

Crypto Regulation Could Advance This Summer

The legislation is currently being reviewed by Senate committees responsible for banking and agricultural oversight. Lawmakers must combine different versions of the bill before a full Senate vote can take place.

According to Bessent, the administration hopes the CLARITY Act will pass during the summer, a move widely viewed as a major step toward creating a comprehensive regulatory framework for the US digital asset industry.
