European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that it is too early to lift sanctions imposed on Iran, emphasizing the need for meaningful internal reforms before any policy shift. Speaking in Berlin during a meeting of Germany’s conservative parties, including the Christian Democratic Union and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union, she stressed that sanctions remain necessary due to concerns over domestic repression.
Von der Leyen noted that the removal of sanctions would require “a fundamental change” within Iran, signaling that European leaders are maintaining a cautious approach despite ongoing diplomatic developments.
Iran Steps Up Diplomacy With Russia as Tensions Continue
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Russia for discussions with senior officials, including President Vladimir Putin. The visit highlights Tehran’s intensified diplomatic outreach as it seeks to ease tensions and negotiate an end to the ongoing conflict with the United States.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Iranian leaders remain free to initiate dialogue, indicating openness to negotiations despite the cancellation of a planned diplomatic visit to Pakistan.
The standoff in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz continues to escalate, with Iranian lawmaker Ali Nikzad declaring that Tehran will not permit a return to pre-war conditions in the key shipping corridor.
Ongoing tensions in the region, combined with firm European sanctions policy and renewed diplomatic efforts, continue to shape the geopolitical landscape and influence global energy and security markets.
