White House Crypto Policy Office Left Vacant After Patrick Witt Departs
Patrick Witt's exit as President Donald Trump's crypto adviser leaves the White House without a named digital assets policy lead. The move was not a surprise, but it raises questions about who is handling crypto policy now. When the president recently introduced a new artificial intelligence czar, the job once shared between crypto and AI appeared to drop its crypto portion. A White House official thanked Witt for his work and said the Clarity Act will remain a priority, without saying who will take over.

A White House official thanked Witt for his work and said the Clarity Act will remain a priority, without saying who will take over.
Who Is Minding Crypto Policy Now
The White House still has a staff of policy advisers, and agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission have several crypto rules in progress. Some voices on Capitol Hill suggest legislative action could still come in the final weeks of the congressional session after the November elections.
How the Digital Assets Office Took Shape
The effort began before Trump’s return in 2025, when he named David Sacks as his AI and crypto czar. Bo Hines became the first director of the digital assets advisory council and the public face of the push, which ended in the passage of the GENIUS Act. Hines later took a job running the US arm of Tether. The Wall Street Journal reported this week that his firm, Nxum, received payments from Tether while he worked at the White House on the GENIUS Act.
Witt and the Market Clarity Act
Witt, Hines’ deputy, took over as executive director and led the push for the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. During long Senate negotiations, he often voiced frustration on X toward those he saw as blocking the bill.
